It’s the million-dollar question; what is it that makes a person truly attractive? Is it their hair, the way they dress, or maybe even their brains? According to a survey conducted by dating website Match.com, the answer is stupidly simple; straight, white teeth.
The survey asked almost 5500 single women and men over the age of 21 what they considered to be attractive in a partner, with nearly 60 percent of men selecting teeth as the most important factor, while a whopping 71 percent of women ranked teeth as the number one feature that makes a man attractive.
While this may seem unusual, the results of the survey were no surprise to biological anthropologist Helen Fisher, a professor at Rutgers University and a Match.com adviser who played a role in developing the survey. “From a Darwinian perspective, good teeth are a real indication of your health – how much you drink, smoke, what you’re eating,” she said in a statement.
Numerous studies have echoed Fisher’s thoughts, one study even found that people reported feeling significantly less attracted to images of people after teeth had been digitally manipulated to look yellowed and stained.
“It’s kind of strange, but I honestly agree with this survey so much,” says Eileen, 24. “People always assume that a man has to have a six-pack or a fat wallet to catch the attention of a girl, but honestly, you can’t go past a great smile.”
Zoe, 29, agrees, saying that she was first attracted to her boyfriend because of his smile. “He just had such a great smile and these amazing teeth, like he really looked after himself and was quite healthy. I loved that and to me, it was incredibly attractive.”
“I think people totally underestimate the power of good teeth,” says Brittany, 21. “If you have super stained teeth I will assume you are a heavy smoker or drink a lot. I’m not saying I would never date a guy with bad teeth, but I would be more likely to notice a guy who looked like he cared for himself and had good hygiene standards.”
According to the survey, the second most attractive characteristic in a person was good grammar, with 55 percent of men believing it has the ability to make a potential partner more attractive, while 69 percent of women agreed.
